Almost all ISO system standards require that internal audits be conducted to establish whether the particular ISO system in question is well defined, implemented and effective in achieving its intended outcomes.
ISO systems auditing is the systematic, independent and documented process for obtaining objective evidence and evaluating it objectively to determine the extent to which the audit criteria, also known as the set of requirements against which the objective evidence is compared, are fulfilled. (ref: ISO 19011).
Audits can be conducted on-site as well as off-site.
Onsite audits are conducted at the location where the system is applied and / or where the activities included in the scope of the audit takes place, usually an office, factory, project site or any other location deemed appropriate or necessary. Onsite audits allow for direct evaluation or witnessing of the activities, practises, documents and records or any other applicable evidence.
Off-site audits, also known as remote audits, is an audit that is conducted partially or completely off site. The audit will cover everything that is usually covered during an onsite audit but uses information and communication technology (ICT) to support the Assessor when a site visit is not possible, appropriate or efficient.
